Hair FAQ

Answering all of your frequently asked hair questions here! I also have lots of info on the hair tab of this website and lots of tutorials and tips on my IG story highlights!

Do you have extensions? No I don’t! I would definitely tell you all if I did! No shame at all!

How do you get your blonde color? Check out this blog post here - it has tons of info and I also go very in depth on my IG story highlights called “blonde color”. You can also check out my recent hair vlog I shared here.

What do you ask for when you get your hair cut? I ask for a blunt cut across the bottom, really soft trim to my face framing layers and any other layers throughout my hair. Whenever I ask for layers, I ask for longer, soft layers that blend in nicely. My face framing layers start at my jawline.

Who cuts your hair? I go to Abby at Bobby Cooper Salon in Broad Ripple.

What’s your favorite straightener:  I’ve had this one for 5+ years and love it!

How do you tame flyaways: Spray a little hairspray on a spoolie and gently brush those flyaways down.

How frequently do you get trims?

I try to go every 2-3 months just depending on how dead my ends feel. I just get the tiniest bit off the ends to freshen them up without taking too much length off. Ask your stylist for a “dusting” of your ends if you are trying to grow your hair out!

Do you blow dry your hair after every wash or do you air dry it? My opinions on this have actually changed in the past year or so. I used to let my hair air dry every so often to avoid putting heat on it, but I noticed that whenever I would do that, I wouldn’t like my hair as much over the next few days and I was almost putting more heat on it to compensate. I’ve noticed that when I take the time to fully blow dry my hair, my “blowout” lasts longer and I can go like 4 days without washing it and I just like the way my hair looks better. So I’d say for the most part, I always blow dry my hair now (using proper heat protectants) and I can spread out my washes further. I still try to let my hair air dry as much as possible before blow drying though!! Shop my fave heat protectant products here.

Dyson Airwrap or curling iron?

This is comparing apples and oranges because they’re two totally different tools! I think anyone who wants to curl their hair should have a curling iron because there’s just so much you can do with them and there are so many good ones at different price points. The Dyson, on the other hand, is so expensive and while it’s not necessary, I personally love mine.  The thing that’s great about the Dyson is that it doesn’t use extreme heat. It’s essentially a blow dryer, straightener, and curler all in one. There’s definitely a bit of a learning curve and it takes a lot of practice to figure out how you like to use it for your hair type, but once you figure it out, it gives your hair an amazing, bouncy, blowout with out extreme heat. THAT SAID, you can achieve almost the exact same look with a blow dryer and curling iron and there are definitely days that I still reach for my curling iron over the Dyson

What’s your natural hair texture? Straight, wavy? When I let my hair air dry it’s a very loose wave with some straight pieces and some poofiness. When my hair is shorter, its wavier/ more poofy, but when it’s longer, it’s weighed down a bit by the length. I don’t love my natural air dried hair but I can make it work if I just add some waves with a curling iron. When I blow dry my hair, I can blow dry it completely straight.

What are your favorite hot tools? Here’s a blog post with a full break-down of my favorite tools!

Favorite hairspray?

What is your hair routine each week? How often do you wash?

I wash my hair about 2x a week so every 3-4 days.

Day 1: I wash and blow dry following all of the tips above. I usually curl my hair as well at this time.

Day 2: My curls are usually still in place thanks to my silk pillow case and I’ll spray a little dry shampoo in my hair.

Day 3: I’ll usually touch up a couple curls around my face and add a little more dry shampoo.

Day 4: I’ll wear my hair in a pony tail, slick back bun, or baseball cap & repeat the steps!

Is your hair genetically so lush? Or is it the products?

I will never deny that genetics play a huge role in my hair (thanks mom!). BUT even the most genetically blessed hair can be absolutely trashed if you don’t take care of it! There have been times in my life where I’ve not taken care of my hair and it showed! I used to not use a heat protectant, I overwashed my hair, and didn’t follow the regimen that I preach now. My hair was straw like, I had tons of split ends, and it didn’t have the shine that it has now. So the answer is yes and yes! Genetics majorly help, but I am 100% on the hook for taking care of my hair everyday.

If I can only buy one product, what should I buy?

Hard question to answer, but if you blow dry your hair, I’d 100% say the Kerastase heat protectant. It’s a blow dry cream that you apply to wet hair before blow drying and it works wonders!

How do you get your curls to hold and not fall throughout the day?

I use a clarifying shampoo once a week & wash it 2x in the shower to get all of the product build up out. Sometimes when hair is weighed down with product or oil, it won’t hold curl. Also, if your hair is getting oily fast, try this scalp serum! Your scalp could be dry/imbalanced which is leading to an overproduction in oil. Make sure you’re only applying conditioner to the ends of your hair, never your scalp. Lastly, try not to touch your hair or run your fingers through it! Hope these tips help!

Tips for humidity?

Ugh humidity is never 100% avoidable but I’ve found that this humidity spray really helps. I literally douse my hair in it!! It doesn’t weight my hair down so I can use a lot. Then I layer some hair spray on top!
