Whoop 3.0 vs 4.0

After a ton of great feedback on my Whoop vs. Apple Watch article from a year ago, I realized it’s now time for another comparison article…this time Whoop 4.0 vs. Whoop 3.0! The Whoop 4.0 version came out in September 2021, but after multiple month long delays due to supply-chain issues, Whoop is finally caught up on orders and I’ve now had enough time to really step back and compare the new version to the old. Since you can still get a free device and free first month membership through my sign-up link, I wanted to make sure to share about this new version! Here’s a summary of the notable differences between the 4.0 and 3.0:

SIZE

The most notable difference with the Whoop 4.0 is its smaller size. The 4.0 is 33% smaller than the 3.0, making it much more low profile than the older version. Though the overall style and no-face look is still the same, the 4.0 is definitely less bulky, which I love…since my goal is to never take it off!

UPGRADED SENSOR

Similar to the 3.0 version, the Whoop 4.0 still uses an LED sensor on the back of the device to track its metrics. However, the new version has even more sensors and overall improvement to its sensing technology. I won’t pretend to fully understand all of the nuances here, but I can definitely say I’ve noticed more consistency in my Whoop data. I’ve always thought Whoop’s data has been great, but the 4.0 seems to now completely avoid any “odd” workout readings or strain measures that just don’t seem right.

NEW METRICS

As a result of the upgraded sensor mentioned above, the Whoop 4.0 adds a few additional health metrics for you to track on a daily basis, including: blood oxygen level and skin temperature. I’ve heard from multiple people that these metrics have been accurate early detectors of sickness (including possible COVID warning signs)...which is even more great feedback for overall health monitoring.

HAPTIC ALERTS

The Whoop 4.0 now has the ability to offer Haptic Feedback, aka vibration notifications, for a few settings. Namely, every time you hit your strain goal for the day, you can get a vibration alert. This is helpful for me if I have a cardio based workout where I’m trying to reach a certain strain goal and don’t want to constantly look at my phone to see how far away I am. Additionally, you can now set Sleep goals and alarms that wake you up via a vibration on your Whoop 4.0. This is really nice if you share a bed with a partner and don’t want to wake them up with an audible alarm!

WATERPROOF BATTERY

This is BY FAR my favorite improvement in the 4.0 version. Similar to the 3.0, Whoop’s signature charging method of slide-on battery pack still allows for you to constantly wear your Whoop and never have to take it off. However, I went through about half a dozen chargers with my 3.0 version, since the battery packs weren’t waterproof and I’d either forget to take them off in the shower or would get them too wet when washing my hands. Now, Whoop upgraded their battery packs for the 4.0 version to make them fully waterproof. You can now shower, bathe, or swim with the battery packs…and it’s a true game changer!

WHOOP BODY

Alongside the release of the 4.0 version, Whoop introduced a new line of wearables called Whoop Body which allow for you to wear your Whoop in a hidden spot on your body (not your wrist). The company recognized that for many people, it wasn’t possible to wear a wrist device on a daily basis for various dress code reasons. Therefore, they now offer various articles of clothing such as underwear, bras, high arm sleeves, shirts, and shorts that can hold your whoop device and monitor your biometrics from different parts of your body.

CONCLUSION

I continue to love using my Whoop, and the 4.0 version knocked it out of the park in terms of useful upgrades and feature improvements. I still highly recommend Whoop if you have a desire to better understand your health at a biometric level or just want to take the next step in your health journey!
